Liquid LifeTasmanian Schools Whitewater Championships Results

Wild weather and changing water levels failed to dampen the enthusiasm of young paddlers from around the state in the Liquid Life Tasmanian Schools Whitewater Championships.

Devonport High School proved itself again to be the best whitewater kayaking school in the state by winning the Champion Schools Trophy at the Liquid Life Tasmanian Schools Whitewater Championships this weekend.

The Friends School, of Hobart, finished a close second with Don College third. The Friends School proved that it will be one of the strongest schools in the future with a large number of enthusiatic, talented younger paddlers.

Ruby Hodgetts – Grade 10 Devonport High School – dominated the girls events and achieved the Champion Girl Trophy for the event.

Andrew Eckhardt – Grade 7 The Friends School – set down the fastest slalom times on his way to winning the Champion Boy Trophy, beating paddlers several years older than himself.

Top individual performances in the downriver race came from Devonport HighÕs Ruby Hodgetts and Jake Pearce who set the fastest girls and boys times respectively.

In the slalom, Ruby Hodgetts again dominated the girls events, with Andrew Eckhardt of The Friends School and Patrick Rushton of Taroona High excelling in the slalom event..

 TIS Rapid Slayer girls from The Friends School dominated the grade 7 event with Erin McGilvray narrowly finishing ahead of Elsa Gales.

Other notable performances came from some of the younger competitors, with 11 year old Locheil Cameron, of Hillcrest Primary, winning both the downriver race and slalom for grade 6 boys.

Kate Eckhardt of the Cottage School was the youngest competitor on the weekend, showing great style in the slalom event.
